Attorney General Mayes Safeguards $1.5 Billion in Federal Funds for Arizona in Lawsuits Against Trump Administration

PHOENIX — Attorney General Kris Mayes announced today that Arizona has safeguarded $1.5 billion in federal funds through ongoing multi-state legal action, ensuring these critical resources continue to serve Arizonans and support essential public programs while the cases proceed in court.

Attorney General Mayes has filed 25 lawsuits challenging the Trump administration. Many of these lawsuits focused on President Trump's unlawful attempts to block or withhold congressionally authorized funds.

Arizona has so far helped safeguard the following:

  • $1.04 billion from NY et al v. Trump (Lawsuit No. 2), including:
    • Arizona Department of Homeland Security (AZDOHS) – $73,140,403
    • Arizona Department of Veterans’ Services (ADVS) – $24,149,600
    • Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) – $25,500,000
    • Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) – $53,277,266
    • Office of Resiliency (OOR) – $365,033,006
    • Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) – $322,097,653
    • Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS) – $186,000,000
  • $35 million from Massachusetts v. NIH (Lawsuit No. 4)
  • $239 million from Colorado v. RFK (Lawsuit No. 8)
  • $4.52 million from Rhode Island v. Trump/IMLS (Lawsuit No. 11)
  • $6.8 million from NY v. Dept. of Education (Lawsuit No. 12)
  • $5.75 million from Maryland vs. Americorps (Lawsuit No. 14)
  • $48 million from Washington v. Dept. of Transportation (Lawsuit No. 17)
  • $132 million from California v. McMahon (Lawsuit No. 21)

These funds, originally at risk of being cut or frozen midstream, are currently protected and remain in place to fund education, infrastructure, public health, veterans’ services, environmental protection, and other essential programs in Arizona.

“These aren’t just numbers, they are an incredible return on investment for the work my office is doing to protect Arizonans and uphold the Constitution,” said Attorney General Mayes. “Every dollar safeguarded means programs Arizonans depend on can continue without disruption. My office will keep fighting in court to ensure our state’s taxpayers and communities are not left paying the price for unlawful actions of the Trump administration.”

The total safeguarded to date is approximately $1.5 billion, preventing harmful cuts to programs that benefit families, students, and communities across Arizona.
