PHOENIX – Attorney General Kris Mayes today filed a motion with the Arizona Supreme Court to establish a briefing schedule for a forthcoming motion requesting a warrant of execution for Richard Djerf. Mr. Djerf was sentenced to death for the 1993 murders of Rochelle, Albert, Patricia, and Damien Luna.
“I will continue to enforce the death penalty because it is the law in Arizona and victims deserve justice,” said Attorney General Mayes. “The heinous murders by Richard Djerf of the Luna family, including their five year old son, shock the conscience – and their loved ones have waited 32 years to see justice served. My office is committed to upholding the rule of law and standing with victims who have endured unimaginable loss.”
The filing gives notice of the State of Arizona’s intent to move for a warrant of execution under A.R.S. § 13–759(A) and Arizona Rule of Criminal Procedure 31.23(b). A copy of the State’s proposed motion for the Warrant of Execution is attached to the filing.
