Arizona Attorney General’s Office Affirms Support for the Civil Rights of LGBTQ Arizonans

PHOENIX—Attorney General Kris Mayes today voiced her office’s commitment to protecting the rights and freedoms of LGBTQ Arizonans. 2023 is already the worst year on record for LGBTQ rights, with over 75 anti-LGTBQ bills becoming law nationwide – more than double the number passed last year, previously the worst year recorded.

With LGBTQ Americans – and particularly transgender Americans – increasingly targeted by extremist legislation designed to restrict their rights, I am reaffirming my office’s commitment to protecting the civil rights of all Arizonans,” said Attorney General Mayes. “Federal and state civil rights laws protect the right of LGTBQ Arizonans to live, work, and freely access public accommodations without being subjected to discrimination, harassment, intimidation, or threats of violence because of who they are. My office is fully committed to enforcing these laws.”

Any Arizonan who believes they have been discriminated against based on their sex, sexual orientation, or gender identity in a place of public accommodation may file a complaint with the Arizona Attorney General’s Office – Division of Civil Rights at www.azag.gov/civil-rights.

The Division of Civil Rights also investigates claims of discrimination in employment, housing, and voting. For more information about the Division of Civil Rights, visit https://www.azag.gov/civil-rights/faq.
