Terry Goddard Affirms Maricopa County’s Need to Protect Luke AFB

(Phoenix, Ariz. -- July 29, 2008) Attorney General Terry Goddard asserted Maricopa County's responsibility to protect Luke Air Force Base from encroachment in a letter sent to the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors today.

"The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors must follow the law and adopt a comprehensive plan to prevent encroachment onto the land surrounding Luke Air Force Base," Goddard said. "Luke is a source of great pride and a vital economic engine for the West Valley. I hope the supervisors will take the steps needed to ensure Luke remains vibrant long into the future."

Goddard's letter is a response to the supervisors' July 25 letter asking him to clarify his March opinion on development of land adjacent to military facilities.

A copy of today's letter is attached.
