Terry Fenzl Appointed Chief of Staff of Arizona Attorney General's Office

(Phoenix, Ariz. -- March 9, 2007) Attorney General Terry Goddard today announced that Terry E. Fenzl, a Phoenix attorney with 38 years of litigation experience, will join the Office April 2 as Chief of Staff.

Fenzl will be responsible for managing all major cases and state, federal and tribal relations. He will work closely with Chief Deputy Terri Skladany, who oversees the Office's management.

"We are very fortunate to have someone with Terry's background in litigation and law firm management accept this key position," Goddard said. "He will bring outstanding legal experience and excellent management skills to our office."

Fenzl joined the Phoenix firm of Brown & Bain (now Perkins Coie Brown & Bain) after earning his law degree from the University of Michigan in 1969 and has spent his entire career there. His professional areas of emphasis include business litigation, intellectual property litigation and Indian law.

He gained a national reputation representing high-profile clients such as Intel, IBM, National Semiconductor and McDonald's Corporation in cases that have involved trade secrets, trademark and patent infringement, consumer class action lawsuits, breach of contract and antitrust matters.

"Terry is a world-class lawyer," said Joel Nomkin, managing partner at Perkins Coie Brown & Bain. "In his 38 years at our firm, he has led some of our most significant and precedent-setting cases, both in the intellectual property arena and with respect to Native American issues. We now take pride in the contributions he is about to make in his appointment as Chief of Staff in the Office of the Arizona Attorney General."

Fenzl was the lead lawyer representing the Navajo Nation in its three-decade land dispute with the Hopi Tribe and played an instrumental role in its recent settlement. That litigation, which began in 1974, was one of the longest-running land disputes in American history.

"I have long admired Attorney General Terry Goddard for his vision, his energy and his dedication to the State of Arizona," Fenzl said. "I am grateful to the Attorney General for this opportunity to work with him in serving the people of Arizona."

A native of Milwaukee, Wis., Fenzl received his bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin. He is married to Barbara Pool Fenzl, a culinary expert and author. They have three grown children.
