(Phoenix, Ariz. - Nov. 3, 2010) Attorney General Terry Goddard today encouraged Valley residents to shred old documents and take advantage of a free shred-a-thon Saturday morning in Tempe. The Attorney General’s Office will co-host the event with the Tempe Police Department from 8 a.m. to noon at the Tempe Police Hardy Substation, 8201 S. Hardy.
“Consumers must be vigilant protecting themselves from identity theft,” said Goddard. “Instead of throwing out old documents, residents should shred them to ensure personal information doesn’t fall into the wrong hands.”
Residents are encouraged to bring old bills, tax returns older than seven years, medical records and other documents containing personal identifying information to shred. In addition to shredding, there will also be an electronics recycling center, where residents can bring old electronic gear such as cell phones, computer monitors, and other outdated items to be recycled, keeping them out of Valley landfills.
Up to two boxes or bags will be shredded for free; additional boxes or bags will be charged $10 each. Electronics recycling will be free of charge, but donations are welcome.
Shredding will be provided by Shred-it, and electronics recycling done by Westech Recyclers.
