Attorney General Mayes Announces Fraud and Theft Charges Against Charter School Executive Director and Others

TUCSON — Attorney General Kris Mayes today announced that Jason Riegert, the former Executive Director of a publicly-funded charter school in Tucson, Academy Del Sol, has been charged with 22 felony counts in Pima County Superior Court.
 
Riegert was indicted on July 27, 2026, on counts of Conspiracy, Illegally Conducting an Enterprise, Theft, Misappropriation of Charter School Funds, Computer Tampering, Fraudulent Schemes and Artifices, and Forgery. The charges stem from the period during which Riegert served as Academy del Sol’s Executive Director.
 
Also charged in the indictment are Riegert's wife, Staci Barton, and the school's former Office Administrator, Kimberly Richards.
 
The case was investigated by the Attorney General's Office Special Investigations Section and is being prosecuted by Assistant Attorney General Matthew Ashton.
 
The charges described above are allegations. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
