Attorney General and County Attorney Decline Investigation of Scottsdale Police Department

(Phoenix, Ariz. – August 20, 2004)  The Arizona Attorney General’s Office and the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office have declined to conduct an investigation concerning allegations of improper conduct by Scottsdale Police Department employees contained in a July 15 anonymous letter forwarded to both agencies.

Upon careful review of the anonymous letter and the accompanying documents by senior staff members of both the Arizona Attorney General’s Office and the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office, it has been determined that most of the allegations relate to non-criminal administrative matters that are not within the jurisdiction of either the Attorney General or the County Attorney.  With regard to allegations of potential criminal conduct, the anonymous nature and the lack of specificity within the complaint restrict the ability of investigators to determine whether a crime has occurred.

Should new information related to this matter providing substantive facts be forwarded to the Attorney General and/or the County Attorney, both offices stand ready to review that information.
