Arizona Attorney General’s Office Warns of Top Issues with Home Warranties

PHOENIX – The Arizona Attorney General’s Office (AGO) receives hundreds of consumer complaints from homeowners about their home warranty company.  It's among the top issues the Consumer Protection Section of the AGO sees each year.

The primary problems cited in the complaints include the warranty company not covering what they promised, not taking care of the homeowner's problem in a timely manner, and undisclosed caps on the amount of coverage they provide.

Home warranties should be written in a way that's objectively understandable to the least sophisticated consumer.

Review the paperwork completely to see what the contract offers versus what they are trying to sell you. Make sure you understand what the warranty covers, when it expires, and whether you will be covered promptly in an emergency. Ask specific questions about exclusions and read that section of the contract carefully.

AGTV spoke with Joe Sciarrotta, Division Chief Counsel for the Civil Litigation Division at the AGO, who shares some of the top complaints from Arizonans.

The AGO has sued several big home warranty companies, putting money back into Arizonans pockets:
