Alternative Dispute Resolution Week Activities

(Phoenix, Ariz. – May 10, 2004)   Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard will join in celebrating “Alternative Dispute Resolution Week” beginning May 10, 2004.  This week is set aside to educate Arizona residents on how they can resolve their disputes using mediation, arbitration, and other forms of Alternative Dispute Resolution methods.  There will be various events throughout the week including an appreciation for all the mediators that provide services to Arizona residents.

Peer Mediation:  Mini-Conference

Conference begins 8:00 a.m.

Mr. Goddard will provide the keynote address at 8:45 a.m. to educators, legal professionals, law enforcement, organizations serving youth and community members regarding the Attorney General’s Office support of peer mediation and conflict resolution programs in school through the Conflict Resolution Unit.

The Conflict Resolution Unit, which is one of the Community Services Programs in the Civil Rights Division, is responsible for mediation and school hotline services.  The school hotline has responded to 140 calls this year, reporting safety matters concerning youth in public and private schools.  The Conflict Resolution Unit is developing a new training initiative for peer mediation and conflict resolution for schools and community groups.

How Mediation Can Work For My State Agency?, a panel discussion for state agencies.

The Office of the Attorney General will host a brown bag luncheon and panel discussion for State Agency personnel.  State Agencies slated to participate are the OmbudsmanCitizen Aide, Department of Economic Services, and the Department of Education.  Representatives from various state agencies will discuss the types of mediation cases and services that may be offered to their constituents.
