Attorney General Mayes Sends Demand Letter to Speaker Johnson Urging Him to Seat Congresswoman Grijalva Without Delay

PHOENIX – Today, on the day of the formal certification of Arizona's special election, Attorney General Kris Mayes has sent a demand letter from the state of Arizona to U.S. Speaker Mike Johnson to seat duly elected Congresswoman Adelita Grijalva without delay.
"It’s way past time for Mike Johnson to stop the political games and seat Adelita without delay. Today, my office is sending a letter to Speaker Johnson demanding he do so," said Attorney General Kris Mayes. "We are keeping every option open to us, including litigation, to hold him accountable and make sure that Adelita is able to begin her work as Arizona's newest member of Congress."
Congresswoman Grijalva was elected by the voters of CD7 on September 23, 2025. Congresswoman Grijalva was elected with nearly 70% of the vote, and unofficial results were provided by the Arizona Secretary of State to the House of Representatives. Congresswoman Grijalva and the State expected that Speaker Johnson would have followed his usual practice and swore her into office at the earliest opportunity, such as he had done with five previous members elected in special elections. Yet the House and its leadership has yet to swear Ms. Grijalva into office. As a direct result of the House’s inaction, Congresswoman Grijalva has been unable to assist constituents impacted by recent flooding disasters in Arizona.
