Terry Goddard Encourages Students to Become Savvy Consumers

(Phoenix, Ariz. - August 9, 2005)  As Arizona students start back to school this month, Attorney General Terry Goddard is asking teachers and community youth organizations to consider sponsoring a LifeSmarts Team for the 2005-2006 school year to help teenagers learn to become smart, savvy consumers.

“I am committed to protecting Arizona’s youngest consumers, our future leaders, from becoming victims of consumer fraud,” Goddard said.  “One of the best ways to accomplish this is to provide opportunities that will increase awareness of consumer and marketplace issues.”

LifeSmarts is a nationally recognized consumer education program for high school students, sponsored by the Attorney General’s Office in partnership with the National Consumers League. The program complements any curriculum in high schools and can be used as an activity for classes, groups, clubs and community organizations.

LifeSmarts competitions are open to high school students in grades nine through 12.  This game-show style competition helps develop consumer and marketplace skills in a fun way and rewards the teens for this knowledge.  The competition begins online with state winners advancing to the national competition to compete for the LifeSmarts championship title.
