Goddard Legal Opinion Provides Guidance to Secretary of State regarding Voter Registration Identification Under Proposition 200

(Phoenix, Ariz. – February 4, 2005)  Attorney General Terry Goddard today issued a legal opinion indicating that an Arizona driver’s license or a state issued ID card obtained after October 1, 1996 satisfies the citizenship requirement to register to vote. The Secretary of State requested the opinion following voter approval of Proposition 200.

In addition to providing the identification, a person registering to vote must sign a statement declaring he or she is a U.S. citizen, and that falsely claiming to be a U.S. citizen is a state and federal crime.
