Former MCSO Detention Officer Sentenced to Prison

PHOENIX – Attorney General Mark Brnovich announced a former Maricopa County Detention Officer was sentenced to one year in prison for Unlawful Sexual Conduct with an Inmate, a class 5 felony. Roy Ramey was also placed on 10 years supervised probation with sex offender terms after he is released from prison.

The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office Professional Standards Bureau investigated and sent the case to the Arizona Attorney General's Office. While employed as an MCSO Detention Officer, Ramey used his position to commit the crime of Unlawful Sexual Conduct on multiple occasions by engaging in sexual activities with a female inmate. Defendant took the same female inmate out of her cell on two occasions for private, fictitious “medical appointments." Once in a private room within the Medical facility, the Defendant had the inmate perform a sex act on him. On two additional occasions, the Defendant entered the inmate’s cell and groped her. The victim reported that the sexual contacts were not consensual, but were the product of the Defendant’s calculated exploitation of her vulnerable position and his abuse of power as an MCSO Detention Officer.

During the sentencing, the Honorable Judge Warren Granville stated that the prison term was appropriate in light of Ramey’s abuse of power, as well as the need to deter all others with like positions from engaging in similar conduct.

Assistant Attorney General Maura C. Quigley prosecuted this case.
