Former DPS Officer Receives 60-Day Jail Sentence

(Phoenix, Ariz. – July 31, 2007) Former Department of Public Safety Officer Chris Young, 28, of Williams, has been sentenced to 60 days in Yavapai County Jail and four years of supervised probation after pleading guilty to one count of bribery of a public servant. He was also ordered to perform 100 hours of community service and submit to mental health and psychosexual evaluations. The sentence includes an additional 90 days of deferred jail time.

According to court proceedings, in April 2006, Young, then a DPS officer, stopped Kyle Parcell for speeding on Interstate 40 in Yavapai County. Parcell, of Temecula, Calif., and his passenger, Myrla Ryan Brock, had been smoking marijuana just prior to the stop. During the traffic stop, Young made an agreement to have Brock expose herself to him with the understanding that Young would not arrest her or her boyfriend for drug related offenses.

Yavapai County Superior Court Judge Pro Tem Warren R. Darrow sentenced Young Monday evening in Camp Verde. Young will report to jail on Sept. 21. Young, a nine year veteran with DPS, resigned from his position in November 2006. Assistant Attorney General Paul Ahler prosecuted this case.
