Flagstaff Defendants Found Guilty

(Phoenix, Ariz. – Sept. 12, 2005)  Attorney General Terry Goddard today announced the guilty verdicts of Alfredo Ortiz, 30 and Pedro Arias, 24, for the murder of Marko Winslow, 19, of Flagstaff. The Coconino County jury returned guilty verdicts September 7. The jury also found the defendants guilty of robbery and aggravated assault.

In January 2004, the defendants sold Winslow marijuana and then began accusing him of working with the police department.  The accusations escalated and ended when Ortiz and Arias took Winslow to a deserted forest area outside Flagstaff and fatally shot him.

Ortiz and Arias, both from Mexico, will be sentenced October 19 when the State will seek natural life sentences on the murder counts and aggravated sentencing on the remaining counts.

Assistant Attorney General Desi Rubalcaba prosecuted this case, and Deputy Coconino County Attorney Ted Reed participated in the prosecution.
