Ex-Tempe Police Officer Indicted on Fraud and Theft Charges

(Phoenix, Ariz. – Jan. 24, 2007) Attorney General Terry Goddard announced the indictment today of former Tempe Police Officer Frank P. Romero, 36, on charges of fraud, illegally conducting an enterprise and theft.

The State Grand Jury indictment alleges that Romero, of Mesa, used his position as treasurer of the Arizona chapter of the National Association of Field Training Officers (NAFTO-AZ) to withdraw more than $15,000 from the organization’s bank account for his personal use. During the time of the alleged theft, Romero was an officer with the Tempe Police Department. He resigned his position on Jan. 1 this year.

If convicted of all charges, he faces up to 27 years in prison. He is scheduled to be arraigned on Feb. 5. Assistant Attorney General Kelly O’Connor is prosecuting this case.
