Boat Builder to Pay $75,000 for Violations in Lake Havasu City

(Phoenix, Ariz. – July 19, 2006) Attorney General Terry Goddard and Department of Environmental Quality Director Steve Owens today announced a $75,000 settlement resolving air quality violations against a boat manufacturer, North American Sleek Craft, Inc.

The company owns and operates a fiberglass powerboat manufacturing facility in Lake Havasu City. It builds fiberglass powerboats that are constructed with products that emit styrene, a hazardous air pollutant. This manufacturing process required the company to secure an air quality permit, which it failed to do.

”The substantial penalty reflects the serious nature of the violation,” Owens said.

According to the complaint filed in Maricopa County Superior Court, North American Sleek Craft failed to secure an air quality permit from ADEQ since 2000. The settlement agreement requires the company to pay $75,000 for its air quality permits, other associated fees and penalties.

ADEQ conducted an investigation during the summer of 2004 to identify boat builders that emit styrene in quantities that require an Arizona Air Quality Control Permit and make sure they were in compliance with state regulations.

“We continue to partner with ADEQ to ensure successful enforcement of air quality laws,” Goddard said. “This partnership helps protect Arizona’s natural resources for the benefit of us all.”

Copies of the complaint and settlement are posted on the Attorney General’s Web site.
