Participation in the “Don’t Lie for the Other Guy” campaign is the latest step in Attorney General Goddard’s ongoing work to combat violent border crime by choking off the cartels’ most critical resources – guns and cash. The campaign seeks to educate residents and visitors to Tucson about the severe penalties associated with “straw purchasing.”  It is also intended to educate federal firearms licensed retailers on how to detect potential straw purchasers.

Straw buyers are otherwise law-abiding citizens who undergo and pass the criminal background check required by federal law before the retail purchase of any firearm. However, these people are not the actual buyers; instead, they use their good name to commit the crime of providing a firearm to a person prohibited by law from possessing a gun. The program’s key message is: Buy a gun for someone who can’t and buy yourself 10 years in jail.
