The productive work and wide range of accomplishments of the Attorney General's Office in the past fiscal year are summarized in our 2010 Annual Report.
The 54-page document provides an overview of the work done by our attorneys and staff from July 1, 2009, to June 30, 2010. The report notes achievements of each of our divisions, and in the front section, highlights major cases and initiatives. They include:
- An historic, $94 million settlement with Western Union.
- An aggressive, multi-faceted assault on mortgage fraud.
- A crucial agreement to protect Luke Air Force Base and boost its chance of becoming a training site for the F-35, the next generation of Air Force fighter jets.
- Helping put an end to high-interest "payday loans" in Arizona.
- Working with our law enforcement partners to dismantle two major drug-trafficking operations.
- Effective efforts to stop deceptive advertising and marketing.
The report also explains the Office's responsibilities and jurisdiction (page 4), provides a breakdown of more than $170 million the Office generated last year for the State and taxpayers (page 12) and presents a chart listing the year's Top 10 Consumer Complaints (page 28).
One other noteworthy measure of the Office's cost-effectiveness is our excellent record in defending the State against liability lawsuits. Claims of more than $1.8 billion were filed during the year with only $4.68 million (less than one-quarter of 1 percent) paid to settle or discharge such claims.
Our attorneys and staff are strongly committed to upholding the law and serving the public interest. Their effort in the past year has been even more commendable in light of budget cuts that have reduced our fulltime employees by nearly 25 percent since I took office in 2003. I'm very proud of our team and all we have achieved.
