2008 Annual Report Recaps Accomplishments
The outstanding work and accomplishments of the Attorney General's Office during the past fiscal year are summarized in our 2008 Annual Report.
The 40-page document provides a look at the wide scope of work done by our attorneys and staff from July 1, 2007, to June 30, 2008. The report recaps achievements by each of our divisions and highlights the year's major cases and initiatives. They include:
-- A record $12 million settlement with a Scottsdale-based land developer, ranking as the largest environmental recovery in Arizona's history.
-- Substantial progress in our fight against methamphetamine with a statewide survey showing declines in use by young people of more than 50 percent in many categories.
-- Precedent-settling agreements with Mexico's top law enforcement officials to work more closely together.
-- The breakup of major human smuggling, arms trafficking and money laundering operations in Arizona.
-- Significant legal victories for consumers in cases involving mortgage, securities and investment fraud.
The report also explains the Office's responsibilities (page 4), provides a chart listing the year's Top 10 Consumer Complaints (page 21) and includes a breakdown of more than $208 million that was generated last year by the Office for the State and taxpayers (page 11). Our cost-effectiveness is also underscored by our record in defending Arizona against liability lawsuits. Claims of more than $3.5 billion were filed during the year, and we were able to resolve them for only $7.6 million.
This Office works hard for the citizens of Arizona, and I'm proud of what we have achieved. Click here to review our 2008 Annual Report.
