Internet Security

Ordering goods and services over the Internet has become a lifesaver to many people. Not only are consumers able to shop online without having to drive all over town, they also are able to search for hard to find items without ever leaving home. Prices are usually very competitive on Internet shopping sites, even with shipping costs. Buying online has many advantages, however, like any shopping experience, it does have its drawbacks, such as not being able to physically touch the item you are buying. Here are some tips for shopping safely over the Internet:

  • Use a credit card, NOT a debit card – a credit card carries some protections that a bank debit card doesn't.
  • Buy only from websites that use secure software programs. These are encrypted so that your personal information cannot be deciphered by a third party who may be viewing your transaction.
  • Check with friends, family and acquaintances for referrals on websites. Do they have a favorite website that they would like to recommend to you to purchase CDs, clothing, auto parts or hard to find items?
  • Use online auctions with caution. Most of the complaints that come to the Attorney General's Office concern items purchased through Internet auctions.
  • Buyer beware: The Internet changes so quickly that you may find a website that looks spectacular but is gone tomorrow.
  • Realize that returning an item might be a hassle and that you may not be entitled to a refund of the shipping fees.
  • Use caution when purchasing items online, such as prescriptions. Online pharmacists might not be licensed in Arizona, thus might not be allowed to legally dispense medications to Arizona residents.
