Protecting children is a key priority of the Attorney General's Office, whether through enforcing laws governing Internet usage, tobacco accessibility or child abuse. The Computer Crimes Act of 2000 makes it a crime for pedophiles to "lure" children over the Internet or knowingly send pornography to children.

Since the signing of the Master Settlement Agreement with the tobacco industry, the Attorney General's Office has been working diligently with tobacco companies to ensure that education efforts to keep children from smoking cigarettes or using tobacco products are properly administered.

The mission of the Child and Family Protection Division is to provide the Department of Economic Security (DES) with high quality and timely legal advice and representation to promote the safety, economic sufficiency and well-being of children, adults and families by:

  • protecting children from abuse and neglect
  • establishing permanent living situations for children
  • increasing the collection of child support orders
  • increasing the number of paternity establishments
  • prosecuting welfare fraud

While the Child and Family Protection Division cannot provide legal advice or representation to the public, resources available to the public are listed below.
